San Rafael Swell: More than 70 million years old, the San Rafael "Swell" is actually an anticline- a huge dome formed by pressure from underneath the earth's surface. The San Rafael Reef is found on the eastern edge of the San Rafael Swell.

Native Americans Indians llived in the San Rafael Swell thousands of years ago. They hunted, fished and farmed in the Swell. Petroglyphs and pictographs can be found through out the Swell, and are the only form of recorded history that exists.Archaic Period: 8,500-2,000B.C. , Fremont Period: 500-1200A.D. , Ute Period: 1300-Present.

The Swasey Brothers where the most famous ranchers in the area. Swaseys Cabin can be found just south of I-70 in the southern part of the Swell. This was also part of the territory for the "Wild Bunch of Robbers Roost" . In later years, the activity turned to mining for uranium. Many mines can be found through out the Swell.
